On April 26th it all went down at our 2nd Anniversary show that featured some of the most amazing bands in California. Honestly, the event was a huge success with truck loads of positive energy. All of the bands performed to the highest levels of gnarlyness and you could hear their passion in every note! Just as important as the bands that took the stage, CVLT Nation would like to salute everyone who came out and showed support. We would like to shout out Gehenna, Seven Sisters of Sleep, Youth Code, Children of God, Stoic Violence, Whip Hand and Unit B for an awesome fucking night. The night’s festivities were caught on film by our comrade in photography Adam Murray – good looking out homie! Without Crash the Clubs and Lace Pickups we would not have been able to pull this off, thank you for you support and hard work. It was cool to be able to connect with people outside of the internet. That being said, we really appreciate everyone who makes this webzine a destination every day! Daniel Menche is a sound artist based out my hometown of Portland, OR. Since his first release in 1993 he has created a vast body of work. His latest release is entitled “Vilké”, released on CD, Double LP (500 copies), and Cassette Tape (50 copies) by Sige records. The title is of Lithuanian origin and translates to “female wolf”. The music is said to be inspired by the sound of a pack of howling wolves Menche heard during a hiking excursion, which served as the essence of this recording.

The album comes packaged in beautiful ash/charcoal paintings by Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer, Ever Lovely Lightning Heart) that accompanies the music perfectly. I am always impressed with the quality of releases Sige Records puts out. You can tell Aaron and Faith put their hearts and souls into each and every release. The amount of attention and detail they put into their releases is unmatched and deserves recognition.

Vilké is broken into 4 parts, each part taking up each side of this Double LP. The music found on Vilké is dark, dense, and textured. Vilké is meticulously crafted; every sound and nuance is masterfully composed and put in just the right place. The 4 parts flow seamlessly, taking the listener on a sonic journey through anxiety inducing loops, soothing ethereal soundscapes, and haunting melody that create a thick atmosphere. Parts 3 & 4 contain the most memorable moments on this LP for me. Part 3 opens with a frantic, tribal drum rhythm that conjured images of being stalked and hunted by a pack of rabid wolves through the night. Part 4 begins with some minimal, dissonant guitar work that slowly transitions into the chiming of a bell, somewhat reminiscent of Current 93’s “Faust”. Buried underneath it all, you can hear what I believe to be the faint choir of the wolves that ties the 4 parts into a coherent whole.

Now this is just totally fucking AWESOME…some of my favorite musical heros have been given a superhero make over! Brazilian designer Butcher Billy re-works the images of Siouxsie Sioux, Mark Mothersbaugh, Ian Curtis, John Lydon, Morrissey, Robert Smith and Billy Idol as comic book superheros. His series is entitled The Post Punk/New Wave Super Friends! Jump on a dirty bassline and check it out!

Deep, deep in the filthy caves of death and doom exists a band called COFFINS! Their debut album on Relapse Records is entitled The Fleshland and is forty five minutes of cryptic low-end dirge that will have you head banging! This audio beast will be unleashed on to the world on July 9th. Who did I fear in 1982? I feared the media and all of the lies they put out about my generation. I was scared that my mom would ship me off to a boot camp that would march the punk rock out me. I remember watching this documentary with my mom called We Destroy the Family: Punks vs. Parents, and it was not fun times. Serena Dank was a money hungry asshole. Check out what the hardcore kids of 1982 had to deal with…When I watch this, I totally realize why the kids were disconnected from the parents!

It’s no secret that we at CVLT Nation are huge fans of CHILDREN OF GOD. Their debut album We Set Fire To The Sky was one of the best releases so far this year. Seeing CHILDREN OF GOD live will make you realize how special this band is. Today it is our honor to be premiering their new video for “Unrelenting Storm” – this visual is intense as fuck!

If you ask people my age what music first really opened their mind, many of them would say funk – it was our gateway to punk. P-Funk Parliament-Funkadelic created a universe that molded our minds into young weirdos. After seeing George Clinton and his band of freaks perform in outlandish costumes, how the Sex Pistols looked was almost normal. Musically, funk was all about self-expression, just like the early punk scene in both England and the States. The P-Funk all stars did not give a fuck, and created a dance beat that would had you under their spell. You could hear the influence of the bouncy, rolling baselines of Funk in early Post Punk and certain 80′s hardcore bands. There would not have been the Gang of Four, Talking Heads, Bush Tetras, PYLON, ESG, Maximum Joy, Glaxo Babies, Minutemen, Big Boys, PIL and many more without this influence. Not all of these bands had a political message, but many of them did, which sounded cool against their driving back beats. So part of Post Punk’s foundation can be found in in the words of Mr Clinton – free your ass and your mind will follow! Today we celebrate the Funk // Post Punk connection with a huge video essay that will tell the story better than my words ever could…Part 2 of this story coming soon: Post Punk and the Dub connection!
