I remember my dad used to tell me stories about leaders like Pol Pot, Mao Zedong and also Idi Amin when I was a kid, maybe thats one of the reasons why I love Dead Kennedys’ “Holiday In Cambodia” when I first heard the song. I always told myself that someday I gotta go to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and finally I did. I spent 4 days in Phnom Penh, it was not for vacation anyway. I came there to work on a project, “company stuffs” if you know what I mean. So after I make sure all my work has done, I decided to go to the museum on Friday (April 6th) by myself – my friends were going to visit another place. I left my hotel around 10.30 am, and arrived there around 11 am. The trip took about half an hour by Tuktuk (a traditional transportation), its not as far as you think since there’s a regulation in Cambodia not to drive fast (below 40km/h for cars, and below 30km/h for motorcycles). You need to pay $2 admission (US Dollar) to enter the museum, every visitor got a photocopied brochure. The horrors started as you walk into the area, you can feel the eerie atmosphere on this place.
“Cheap” movies always have a special place in my heart, be it film noir, exploitation, surreal, ‘cult’, horror, or even sci-fi. Not just about the cheesy stories, but they also have the best titles and even the coolest taglines than other ‘mainstream’ movies. How come you dont love the titles like “I Dismember Mama”, “Plan 9 From Outer Space”, “I Was A Teenage Frankenstein”, “Night Of The Howling Beast”, “I Was A Shoplifter” or even “Teenagers From Outer Space”? Fuckin’ ‘classy’ movie titles! Well dont forget about the poster’s artworks too: the vibrant colors, the illustrations, the layout and typos are amazing. Collecting original vintage movie posters is always worthed, even the price of original movie posters like “Jaws” or “Creature From The Black Lagoon” are amazingly insane! Well enough said, check out some cool “B” movie posters after the jump!
I’ve always been interested with visual art since my early years, I bought and collected various Japanese comics when I was around 8 or 9. But when I came to a bookstore to buy a comic with my parents, suddenly I saw a stack of horror novels and the covers really attracted me. Yes it was Goosebumps, I picked up a copy that day – I remember it was “The Beast From The East”. I have to admit that the main reason I bought the novel was because of the cover art, I couldnt get enough of the series ever since. If you have keen eyes, some of the covers have the signature of the cover artist Tim jacobus. He’s became one of my first fav artist as a kid, I remember I tried to redraw “Vampire Breath” and “Bad Hare Day” back then. The vibrant colors and the surrealistic yet horror imagery that Tim created really stimulate the reader’s imagination, you can tell after seeing the covers that the stories are rad. Dont judge the book by its cover? Well I have to disagree! I cant seem to find the scans of the covers in good quality, but anyway check out Tim Jacobus’ cover artworks after the jump!
As a visual artist, doing art collaboration is always fun and keeps me creative. Especially if the artist we collaborate with has a unique style, or if the technique is different from usual. I love anything surreal and bizarre, for me doing an Exquisite Corpse collaboration is a homage to the Surrealism movement. Some of you might wondering, what the fuck is Exquisite Corpse? Exquisite Corpse was invented by Surrealists and started about 1925, but different source would say it was already invented before 1918. It was started as a “writing game”, one player would write a phrase on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player. The name of the collaboration is derived from a phrase that resulted when Surrealists first played the game: “Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau” (“The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine”), and later this technique was adapted to drawing and collage. But the technique is not forgotten, nowadays many artists still doing Exquisite Corpse. Usually an artist would draw / make a collage on a paper, and let half of the paper blank. When he/she has finished, his/her part will be covered except for 3 cm. This artwork will be sent via mail, and other collaborator will finish the blank part with only seeing 3 cm strip. Other way is done digitally, but the same rule still apply: only let a small part seen. Sounds rad right? Here are some Exquisite Corpse done by Surrealists, both from the pioneers and nowadays artists!

Hello there freaks, been a long time since last time I posted shit here. So here we go again, lets talk about something freaky and weird – well in the sense of art. If you never heard of Adolf Wölfli (February 29, 1864 – November 6, 1930), he was one of the first artists to be associated with Outsider Art / Art Brut. His artworks were created at a mental asylum near Bern – Switzerland, where he spent rest of his life. He was sexually and physically abused as a child, his father also was a criminal and alcoholic – maybe thats one of the reason why he grew up as a troubled man. In 1895 he was committed to the Waldau Mental Asylum (and diagnosed as a schizophrenic), after arrested (for the second time) for attempting to molest a 3.5 year old girl.

For some of us – young generation, 70′s and 80′s UK punk is just a story we read from a random blog or magazine’s articles, but for Janny its a HISTORY he has been a part of, a story to tell to young punks! I friended with Ste “Janny” Jantzen (formerly of The Deformed) on facebook, and got a chance to interview him about good ‘ol days of The Deformed, CRESS and also punk’s raddest moment back in the early 80′s. For those who dont know The Deformed, they were a “goth flavoured” punk band from Wigan (North-West, U.K.) formed in the early 80′s, put a track on Crass Records compilation LP and recorded a couple demos and two EP’s during their active years. Check out Cvlt Nation’s interview with Janny, punks not dead!

I supposed to post the interview with this filthy Indonesian black metal duo like two or three months ago eh, but after a long await finally they replied the email! If you forgot about them (which you should not, beacuse they are kick ass!), read my previous post about Fallenlight. Well I like my coffee black, just like my metal. Check out Cvlt Nation’s interview with Abenz and M.OT.F. from Fallenlight, right after the jump!
Yes its time for another PUNK mixtape, be it anarcho / gothic / post-punk / wave / whatever. Or should we say, gloomy punk? Well to hell with labelization anyway, this time I featured both old and new bands. Some are well-known, some are obscure, but one thing for sure: THEY ARE RAD! You know the rules, right? Now drag yourself out of the cave, the airwaves will lead you to your own grave!
Dave McKean is one of my favourite artist and source of inspirations, this multi-talented English artist works with various mediums such as illustration, photography, graphic design and also filmmaking. He is also a jazz pianist, and a comic artist who has worked with DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics. His work incorporates drawing, painting, photography, collage, digital art and sculpture, creating somekind of abstract and surreal imagery. He has created some of my favourite album artworks from various solo artists/bands such as: Tori Amos, Buckethead, Alice Cooper, Fear Factory, Testament, Kreator, Front Line Assembly, My Dying Bride, Project Pitchfork and Skinny Puppy just to name a few. I really love the way he use ‘delicious’ texturings, unique placement of typography and (sometimes with the use of) vibrant colors, I’m not ashamed to admit that he absolutely plays a big role in developing my artistic sense. After the jump, check out some rad cover artworks by Dave McKean!
Jason Hopkins is the mad scientist behind Abhominal, he created deranged, deformed and freaky creatures behind this moniker. This UK based artist works with sketch and 3D program, experimenting with “flesh” and form to create what he call as “perfect posthuman beings”. I remember stumbled across his dA gallery like two years ago, one of his piece really caught my attention. Untitled 5 looks like a deformed creature sitting alone, needs to be loved. Holy shit, beautifully ugly creature! From his writings, I can tell that he’s obsessed with science fiction, evolution, human genetic and everything in between. But to create such strange beings, I have no idea whats inside his insane mind. Well if you havent seen much of his creations, I urge you to browse through his website while jamming Creation Is Crucifixion and started to question yourself: WHO IS THE ENGINEER? Abhominal is the answer! Now lets step inside Jason Hopkin’s laboratory and meet his freaky creatures, after the jump!
