May 2012 17

Interview by Sean Fitzgerald

Bolt Thrower celebrated twenty five years in action this year. They raised £12,411.80 for Teenage Cancer Trust from the ‘Boltfest’ birthday bash they had along with Autopsy, Discharge, Benediction & Vallenfyre. I talked to Jo Bench from the band just before ‘Boltfest’.

The Blood Cult Of Putrefaction
May 2012 15

The debut LP by Ireland’s Putrefaction is a heavy dose of dark metallic crusty riffs skewered together by visions of concentration camps, putrefied bodies, cities consumed by filth, corruption and disease. The opening track ‘Scourge’ leads us in, with distorted feedback slowly fading and declining into a heavy bass tone atmospheric riff. This as all fans of heavy music know is the revving up and things after this are going to go pretty fucking awry. Much like being handcuffed to a car that’s about to explode. There’s the riff change, a low-pitched roar and yes, balls to the fucking wall, things have gone very awry!

Alda
Tahoma Review
Apr 2012 20

Alda give us the sounds of deep ancient forests, a labyrinth of dark folk shifting to heavier and more dense black metal, then transcending to druidic like chants. This album ‘Tahoma‘ was originally a cassette only release, but now through Replenish Records is available on limited (to 300) double vinyl with a heavyweight gatefold sleeve.

The opening song ‘In The Wake Of An Iron Wind’ like the rest of the album is like a journey beginning so tranquil and then goes to bleak black metal then spirals into the solitude of a barren landscape. Your left daydreaming of living a transcendentalist life or hiking through a forest. The next four songs carry you through to just under an hour of dark almost ritualistic atmosphere.

Nature is fetish
Mar 2012 31

Photographer and model Kris Mort from Austria brings us a dark world of occult and witchcraft. Dreamlike imagery of pagan rituals mixed with a look of seventies Jean Rollin horror movies like ‘Requiem for a Vampire‘ or ‘Fascination‘. Kris pulls together gorgeous landscapes and self-portraits all in an eerie bewitching way. If you like 70’s Euro cult and movies like Lars von Trier’s ‘Antichrist‘ you’ll enjoy www.kristmort.com

CVLT Nation interviews Italy’s Cancer Spreading
Mar 2012 29

Fans of Hellshock, Last Legion Alive, Axegrinder etc will love Italy’s Cancer Spreading. Dark crust infused with Death Metal riffs. Thanks to Gabri for answering the questions.

CVLT: Tell us about the history of Cancer Spreading and what have you been up to lately? I also see you played at the Dewdrop Squat in London, how did that go and have you played many places outside of Italy?

CS: Cancer Spreading is a stenchcore band born in 2006… since then we added a second guitarist in 2009, released some crap (a demotape, 3 split 7″s, a split Lp, a full 7″ ep and now a full lenght cd.), toured Europe a couple of times, played in some fests and a shitload of gigs. Recently we have a new permanent bassist after our old one went away in 2010 and since then some friends from other bands helped us to play live. Our next release will be a split 7″ with Black Trinity from Greece (which is on press now) and a split Lp with Last Legion Alive from Belgium that we will record next summer. London has been a great experience for us, we stayed there one week and I have great memories of it… thanks again to the mighty Deathdrop Crew! I know that now they’ve been evicted, I wish them all the best. We have played in England, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Holland, Switzerland, France… maybe I have forgotten some. Probably the countries where our shit seems to be more appreciated are Germany and Czech Republic, but I think that probably every country have his own good and negative sides.

CVLT Nation Streaming Coldwar:
Last Days Of The 4th Sun
Mar 2012 14

Coldwar have a valence of chaos and aversiveness that pervades in their music through idiosyncratic symbolism and noise. They have been in existence for over ten years now, rejecting every thread along the way. With their sound progressing even further to an even heavier, darker doomed landscape with last years release of ‘Christus Deathshead’. Political commentary without being cliché or sanctimonious. Bleak, cold and oppressive ambience permeates into intense spiraling riffs combined with a stellar growl. This is a portrait of the apocalypse, this is Coldwar.

CVLT Nation gives you an exclusive of a new unreleased track ‘Last Days Of The 4th Sun’.

Cvlt Nation Interviews Antisect
Mar 2012 06

For folks who read CVLT Nation, I don’t think there is much need for an introduction to Antisect. But briefly they, as we all know had their roots in anarcho-punk squatter scene, then evolved into a heavy eerie mid-tempo dirge. Always keeping the dark political overtones.

In the eighties there were many punks who used to hitchhike around the UK and follow Antisect from gig to gig. Much like others did for Crass or New Model Army, thus giving them a cult like status. The chant of the lyrics “War is oblivion and the ghost of mankind” might be a frightening echo from the past. But it still reigns true as we still live with wars, propaganda, surveillance and repressive governments. Unlike other acts who reform they have not toned down or are not just going through the motions. They are still as relevant and as powerful as ever.

The Vitality of Pesanta Urfolk
Feb 2012 05

It’s been said so many times before of how the internet revolutionized music and how we acquired music. Now we store and play music on our computer. Of course we also get a few CD’s which we rip onto our computer. And of course most releases these days are the usual CD format with a nice little booklet with lyrics and band photo, all well and good.

But since 2008, Pesanta Urfolk has knocked all that shit on the head. It has re-energized and given new vitality to music and how it should be presented. Fresh ideas, unforgettable layout, original music and all released on limited vinyl. All done with a love for music and not money.
