In 1978, Steve Ignorant with his corrosive speech and sardonic lyrics proclaimed that, in fact, punk was dead. He believed that systems, movements, and all other organizations would invariably dig their meat hooks into the spirit of the music and use it as a means to exploit and market an ideology. In an ironic twist of fate, his band Crass (along with bands such as Subhumans, Conflict, Zounds, and Rudimentary Peni) would receive mainstream attention as pioneers of anarcho-punk, also regarded as peace punk, leaving many of their British contemporaries in the shadows of their subsequent success.
Groups like The System, Omega Tribe, Lost Cherrees, Lack of Knowledge, Blyth Power, and The Mob were amongst those that had fallen into darkness. Many others were even signed to Crass Records (see their A-Sides compilations) and/or had opened for them at their shows but just never caught on. They had moved away from the cacophony that typically defined the genre, gravitating toward melodic chants and stripped-down folk instrumentation. This distinct sound wasn’t nearly as abrasive or confrontational in form but lyrically and poetically there was much still in common including a strong political undercurrent.
Flash forward twenty plus years in the future to the Pacific northwest where a group of subversives have been resurrecting the once echoed calls of those unsung UK artists. PDX is both the revival and re-imagining of that forgotten sect. Based out of Portland, Oregon, the scene incorporates components of post-punk, crust, d-beat, goth, new-wave, and industrial to create an emotional outpouring while staking and laying claim to new ground.

The two young dudes who started the Los Angeles clothing brand Vow, Christopher and Jorge, describe what they create as “equal parts occult, cynical and abrasive.” I would describe it as part clothing brand, part DIY project, like finding a dope vintage tee and silkscreening some of your art on it for a friend. These guys put love and wit into their creations, with their tongue-in-cheek hand-printed graphics and hand-distressed tees, lovingly washed many times so that you don’t have to. I think my favorite piece is their vegan leather grocery tote, a collabo they did with Little Moons. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but Santa Monica banned plastic bags from grocery stores last year, so I have been dutifully carrying around my reusable bags everywhere. Although this tote really is too awesome to be used for storing food in. You can pick up any of their tees or totes in their webstore HERE. After the jump, check out a selection of their offerings as well as images from their SS12 lookbook.
As the world turns, global warming is getting worse! Living in Los Angeles, it’s a trip when you ride on the freeway and see how hardly anyone car pools (2 people in LA!) or gives a shit about how their cars are fucking up the environment. For years, punks have given a voice to issues that might otherwise go unheard, and this definitely goes for Mother Nature. This is why our favorite tumblr this moment is Fuck Yeah Bici Punx (RIDE A BIKE OR DIE!), because it highlights punks that have decided to celebrate the two-wheeled moving machine called the bicycle. So after the jump, check out the RIDE A BIKE OR DIE gallery!

There is a new home for the few and far between dark clothing brands, and it is You’re Not Human. The brainchild of Sofi Donuts, You’re Not Human is a UK-based online store, with it’s first lineup of brands being CVLT Nation, Actual Pain, Raised by Wolves, ScumFuck, BA.KU, Creature x Peter Beste, Thrasher and Witchcraft Hardware. With her site’s illustrations & Darkthrone-inspired logo by French, owner of Witchcraft Hardware, Sofi has envisioned a webstore with an awesome aesthetic. It’s pretty grand to be able to go into one shop and find so many killer tees, and we get so much love from the UK, we are happy to give back – You’re Not Human will be the exclusive carrier of CVLT Nation for the next couple of seasons. You’re Not Human opened it’s portal to the dark side yesterday, and we are stoked to be a part of Sofi’s beautiful nightmare! Sofi will be stocking the shop with more underground brands as it grows, so make sure to keep in touch via their social media (links after the jump) so you are abreast of their updates. After the jump, check out images from the You’re not Human lookbook shot by Rebecca Naen, featuring model Hannah May & Gonga guitarist, George, wearing Bryan Proteau’s design Constellations and Halseycaust’s design Crown of Eyes.
The Moon Sisters are more magical than ever. Since their CVLT Nation introduction just short of a year ago, these beautiful ladies have transformed Sisters of the Black Moon into a thriving culmination of mystical treasures. Not only does their vintage shop continue to fill with unbelievable threads, but with the revamp of their official website, they’ve also formed some amazing collaborations, allowing their brand to expand and take form tenfold. SOTBM are now proud connoisseurs of organic apothecary and sanctuary items, metal-wielded, crystallized jewels, and custom-made regalia; working with and selling exclusive designs from artists and designers such as Ovate, Onward Into The Future, Alchemy, Heyoka Leather, and Irinalaaja. Stunning editorials by family friend Alexandra Valenti, who’s been by their side since the very beginning, are also a staple to their realm of shadowy eccentricities. These women truly do seek to create a world for their work to live in. And man, do I want to live there, too. But what is most magical about SOTBM is that in creating this world, it has become a sanctuary for like-minded creators, artisans and connoisseurs of shadowy delight. It’s yet just another manifestation they embody, emphasizing the inter-connectivity of humankind.
Wartime Collective is an Anarco/Crust Punk-inspired streetwear brand that I have mad respect for. They have just released six new tees for their Spring 12 season, and all of them hit the mark. One reason that I like Wartime Collective is that they have found their own creative voice, and they are not afraid to speak their fucking mind! Straight up, you can tell that this is gear designed by punks for punks. Their tees worship music – “Cimex Division” and “Warpart” might just find their way into my t-shirt collection. Check out all of their designs after the jump, and you can purchase them now at the Wartime Collective webstore!

CVLT Nation say they’re trying to bring people who are usually on the fringes of society and in their own little sects together to appreciate what each other are creating. CVLT nation, who are actually celebrating their one-year anniversary this week, is two things—a clothing brand and a webzine, set up by former Rockers NYC main man, Sean Reveron and partner Meghan MacRae. Sean and Meghan run the clothing side of CVLT Nation, mostly by having a selection of artists they’re into design tees for them, and CVLT Nation the webzine is the pair and a worldwide network of contributors writing about underground punk and metal, and a bit of fashion.

CVLT Nation Three is now in the CVLT STORE and in stores worldwide! CVLT Nation Three is an exploration of dark symbols and occult imagery. We see the world through the eyes of alchemists and conjurors, and with their knowledge we create powerful magickal images to communicate with the universe. This season features one of a kind artwork from talented and well-known artists from the metal community. We worked with Alexander Brown, Bryan Proteau, Halseycaust and Elias Tormentor to create hand-drawn graphics that reflect the dark spirit of CVLT Nation. We also introduce our photographer collaboration series with four photo tees, two by Seattle photographer Alan Hunter, FUNERAL PARTY and NO LIGHT SHINES, and two by NYC’s Samantha Marble, UNHOLY HOUR and SONIC TEMPLE. CVLT Nation Three features t-shirts, tank tops, crew sweatshirts and 6-panel snap-back hats – in addition to our classic DOOM snap-back, we are offering our NO GODS snap-back. Everything in CVLT Nation THREE is made in the USA supporting our local businesses. CVLT Nation garments are produced in very limited numbers, and most will never be reprinted.
