Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LIV
Curated by Bacchus
May 2012 16

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LIV Curated by BACCHUS mixtape is live now! This Irish horde has put together an awesome audio mindfuck that will have your brain spazzing! Besides curating this mixtape, BACCHUS is on an East coast tour right now with Torchrunner, peep the dates after the jump! Check out what inspired this musical storm below, and turn the volume up to 20!

This is our tour mixtape. It was compiled on our Euro tour last January. It’s a good mix of what we listened to in the van that tour. There is lots of shit we can’t listen to while driving, as it just sounds crappy on the van speakers & crap sounding stuff makes everyone cranky.

To Live a Lie Records
Mixtape For CVLT Nation
May 2012 15

Today we kick off a new series of mixtapes, curated by record labels for the CVLT Nation readers. Our inaugural mix is curated by Raleigh, NC’s To Live A Lie Records, and gives you a taste of what you can find on their roster. Check out their description below, and stream this amazing mix below…

In an effort to be fair in picking out songs, I decided to use the scientific method to give people precisely what they have liked and wanted rather than letting my own biases take over. I went onto my newly populated Bandcamp page, ran a stats report on the top listened to songs in the last thirty days (April to May) and picked through and removed songs that are the start of albums, since those tend to have artificially increased numbers of listens when someone wants to see what a band on there sounds like. I tried to further do that with second songs, thinking that might be the next person just listening to the whole album in order and then shutting it off if his time didn’t permit. Last, I took that order and flipped it around so the most popular songs are built up to. Here we are with the cream of the crop of my releases, as liked by the general populace, using a sample size of over 11k song plays!

CVLT Nation
Deathrock 2012 Mixtape
Curated by Oliver Sheppard
May 2012 11

Deathrock never died, but it would be willfully ignorant to claim there isn’t new blood currently reinvigorating the genre. The recent uptick in the number of bands owes a lot to the DIY hardcore punk scene.

Some of the new bands, like Blue Cross, began as side projects of hardcore acts (Germ Attak, in that case). Others, like Deathcharge, the Spectres, Crimson Scarlet, and Lost Tribe, either started as punk bands, or feature members that got their start in bands from that scene. There is a strong tinge of anarcho/peace punk among the new bands, too; one of the best current bands in the genre, Christ vs Warhol, use the phrase “anarcho post-punk” to describe themselves at their Facebook page. It’s hard not to hear the influence of the old female-fronted early 80s bands like Blood and Roses, Madhouse, Lost Cherees, Poison Girls, and Rubella Ballet in the sound of Arctic Flowers, Tanzkommando Untergang, Dekoder, Dead Cult, and Cemetery. In the meantime, older bands like Rudimentary Peni, Alien Sex Fiend, Bloody, Dead and Sexy, The Damned, and Killing Joke still make new material – and some of their recent stuff is included here for good measure, tying in the old with the new. A refocusing on the DIY punk roots of the music (the original bands like Theatre of Hate, 45 Grave, Superheroines, UK Decay, and TSOL all began as punk bands themselves, after all) has injected a new urgency into the sound. In short, 2012 is a very good time to be into gothic punk rock. So, forget about “grave wave,” forget about witch house (please), and forget about dark-indie-revival-etc. blather. This is all about a raw, returning-to-its-gloomy-basics type of dark punk being made by, thankfully, a growing number of bands now. There are way more bands than could be covered here (like, for example the ubiquitous Spanish-language and Latin American deathrock bands, which are among the best), but this should serve as a good appetizer for what all is out there. Get out your eyeliner, turn on your fog machine, and grab your Aquanet – goth is going anarcho.

As a band, we all come from very different musical backgrounds and have similarly varying tastes in music. This mixtape is a collection of what we each decided was influential in our songwriting. We hope you enjoy it.

FromClevelandWithHate…Mixtape
Curated by Joe Yanick!
May 2012 09

Joe Yanick of Masakari/Little Sister/Trespasser has curated a special mixtape for CVLT Nation entitled From Cleveland With Hate… that gives you the nitty gritty of this city’s rich punk history! Now read what our homie has to say about this audio history lesson he put together to fuck with your head! Respect to Cleveland & Joe, good looking out!

I made this mix not necessarily of my favorite bands but of some of the ones I feel most accurately chronicle Cleveland’s impressive history in punk rock. I couldn’t begin to cover everything but I feel like it’s adequate in introducing you to some bands you love, some bands you may have not even heard of, and some bands that helped shape the sound of punk in America. Cleveland’s never been nice. It’s never been easy, but it has always been great. Love them or Hate them, these are among some of the most important punk bands.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LI
Curated by -(16)-
Apr 2012 30

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LI Curated by -(16)- is 19 track, whacked-out heavy journey packed full of awesome grooves. Last week, these lords of heavy released their new album, Deep Cuts Dark Clouds, via Relapse, and the record is the shit! Now it’s time to make your ears melt – have a listen to -(16)-’s Sonic Cathedrals Vol.LI…Check out the band’s description below, stream the mix and download after the jump!

“Mixtape” is a term that conjures up such weird memories. For me, it was a mixtape that I awkwardly gave to some girl with braces who hung out at the skate ramp. Hopes were that I was turning her on to something, or better yet, that I would somehow subliminally find her to be a kindred spirit, so that we could drink Dr. Pepper and Captain Morgan while her parents were out of town. Dry humping to Dead Can Dance or staying up late to watch “Headbanger’s Ball” would surely follow.

In the times before the “headphone isolation” that is music today, there would also be the mandatory mixtape taken on tour. If we were lucky, the tape deck had “auto reverse,” so we didn’t have to flip the cassette, and could use our motor skills more wisely by smoking weed out of a coke can while driving through a snow storm out of Reno en route to Gilman.

Anyway, onto our contribution: Aside from some obvious -(16)- influences, the songs that Tony and I chose are more like what you’d hear at a high school reunion. That is, if your high school was wasting your twenties and thirties playing metal and trying to erase your teens by way of feedback and breaking bottles in squats. Enjoy!
