Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LI Curated by -(16)- is 19 track, whacked-out heavy journey packed full of awesome grooves. Last week, these lords of heavy released their new album, Deep Cuts Dark Clouds, via Relapse, and the record is the shit! Now it’s time to make your ears melt – have a listen to -(16)-’s Sonic Cathedrals Vol.LI…Check out the band’s description below, stream the mix and download after the jump!
“Mixtape” is a term that conjures up such weird memories. For me, it was a mixtape that I awkwardly gave to some girl with braces who hung out at the skate ramp. Hopes were that I was turning her on to something, or better yet, that I would somehow subliminally find her to be a kindred spirit, so that we could drink Dr. Pepper and Captain Morgan while her parents were out of town. Dry humping to Dead Can Dance or staying up late to watch “Headbanger’s Ball” would surely follow.
In the times before the “headphone isolation” that is music today, there would also be the mandatory mixtape taken on tour. If we were lucky, the tape deck had “auto reverse,” so we didn’t have to flip the cassette, and could use our motor skills more wisely by smoking weed out of a coke can while driving through a snow storm out of Reno en route to Gilman.
Anyway, onto our contribution: Aside from some obvious -(16)- influences, the songs that Tony and I chose are more like what you’d hear at a high school reunion. That is, if your high school was wasting your twenties and thirties playing metal and trying to erase your teens by way of feedback and breaking bottles in squats. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XLVIX Curated by Mike Meacham of LOSS is live and in full attack mode! I’m not going to say much, but it should be known that listening to this mixtape will cause a slow death and bury your nightmares in the soil of doom. Check out Mike’s description below, stream the mix and download after the jump!
This is a playist of songs I compiled and arranged in hopes to make you feel uncomfortable. These songs have nothing to do with the rest of the members of Loss as we all have our own influences and additionally I did not want to make compilation of a bunch of obvious songs/bands either, so I gathered most of this from the part of my personal collection that wasnt typical black/death metal and doom, though some made its way in. Two hours is nowhere near enough time to “cover all the bases” within my collection of music but as I said I just want to make you feel uneasy… Unjoy.”

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XLVIII Curated by SPLIT CRANIUM is all the way live! Let me tell you what is extra fun about being a part of this series is hearing how every mixture is full of surprises. SPLIT CRANIUM went to another planet of audio art with their song selection. Check out their description below, stream the mix and download after the jump!
Sean/Cvlt Nation kindly invited Split Cranium to compile a mix tape, and mentioned something about selecting some of our favorite D-beat oriented tracks. We’ve defiantly ignored Sean’s gentle prodding, and managed to avoid including any D-beat oriented tracks whatsoever. Instead what we’ve collected is an odd mix of of recent obsessions, long time favorites, and work by close friends who also happen to make great music. If there’s any unifying theme at all it is this: music that often includes “non-musical” elements and production – harsh electronics, murky effects and samples, horrible recordings, and sounds that exist outside the context of the song while occupying the same space. These are all things that have inspired us as musicians and have seeped into the music we make as Split Cranium. We hope you enjoy what we’ve collected and discover some new music along the way. Thanks for listening….. Go!

All of these bands have had such an incredibly HUGE impact on our lives. We remember the first time we discovered The Misfits, the snottiness and badassness associated with teenage rebellion. Flower Travellin’ Band took us to new plateaus of psychedelic adventuring. The Angelic Process CRUSHED our perception of Heavy and old Electric Wizard fuckin’ rules. These are the most definitive and influential bands of our generation. Absorb yourself in Cosmic Psychedelia.

CVLT Nation is super stoked to be releasing Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XLVI Curated by Age of Collapse today! Age of Collapse has curated a wide-ranging mix that shows the depth of this band’s influences, something that comes through in their music as well. Check out what they have to say below, and check their upcoming West Coast tour dates after the jump. Blast this mix beyond loud, and come out on Thursday to support Age of Collapse at the CVLT Nation 1st Anniversary show!
Whenever we’re writing new music we always come up with elaborate names to describe certain sections of each song. Absolutely ridiculous names like “Full Speed Fairy Tale”, “Tough Noodlez” or “Troll Fucking Stomping”. I’m not entirely sure why we do it, but I think we’re trying to set some middle ground, where all 4 members’ unique musical influences aren’t isolated or held back. As a band we feel it’s important to not allow our “crust genre” to dictate what influences we pull from. Whether it’s Sean’s crust and doom metal influence, Xavi’s powerviolence and pop punk, Steve’s black and prog metal or Blaine’s British heavy metal and screamo, we want all our influences to shine through in our music, culminating in something unique, brutal, passionate, exciting, bizarre and fun.
The playlist we’ve put together is a mix of songs that have been super influential to our sound as well as some stuff we just plain love listening to. Enjoy!

These are some songs that have inspired me in the music I create. Some songs I have listened to since I was 14 and the meaning is still as powerful as ever. The last song on the list changed the way I heard and felt music, has a very special place in my heart and was the impetus behind my desire to create music. Some songs that are important to me are missing because I only have them on vinyl, and some songs are very new inspirations for me, and made by good friends who I look forward to working with. – Faith

Trust me when I say I’m ultradelic excited to announce Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XLIV curated DEPHOSPHORUS. When I first heard this band, my whole fucking world changed, because I had never heard anything like it. DEPHOSPHORUS took the chance to curate a mix on the next level, with two of the members painting two vicious audio portraits of mayhem. So read what the band has to say below, and make sure to download this motherfucker after the jump! PlayVol. XLIV so loud that the Martians in outer space will be head banging!
I approached this mixtape like a DJ set. There’s some classic old tracks, representing my roots and the backbone of my heavier musical tastes. There are also some newer songs from bands and albums that have really inspired me these last years, keeping the flame of the underground alive in me. There’s only one Greek band, because we will definitely come back later with an all-Greek mixtape! – Panos
This is actually what I like to listen to most of the time. It’s not just that though. This is actually what Dephosphorus is inspired by usually, when it comes to songwriting. So, simple and short, take a seat. – Thanos
