CVLT Nation
Deathrock 2013 Mixtape by
Oliver Sheppard
Mar 2013 08

While “legacy” dark bands like Killing Joke and The Damned continue to tour and release new material into 2013, last year saw an upsurge in the number of punk bands reclaiming deathrock’s DIY roots. The newer bands are producing a unique take on the cobwebbed genre that blends elements of 80s peace punk, crust, and old school gothic rock with darker postpunk sounds.

What follows below is a good sampling of bands that have producing newer output in this developing new sonic milieu that has largely grown up inside of the international hardcore punk scene. My previous two deathrock mixtapes included bands like Bellicose Minds and The Estranged; below you will find newer songs by bands like The Spectres and Moral Hex, who continue to represent the West Coast’s strong showing in this genre. Italy’s Horror Vacui and Dystopian Society are included, too, along with Spain’s Belgrado, representing southern Europe’s strong interest in this style of music. For good measure, newer tracks by Killing Joke (2012) and Rudimentary Peni (2008) are put in to tie the newer bands into the old.

In the wake of punk, from about 1978 onwards, dark forms of punk and postpunk flowered internationally, with various regional variations. In Spain, there was the Siniestro style of postpunk pioneered by bands like Paralasis Permanente; in Germany, depro-punk by bands like EA80 and Fliehende Strume (who still exist) came about; England obviously saw postpunk, gothic rock, and so-called :positive punk”; southern California saw the birth of deathrock while the East Coast of the USA bore witness to horror punk (Misfits and The Cramps); and Japan likewise saw the birth of “positive punk” with bands like Auto-Mod and Phaidia.

The following mix is by no means exhaustive — previous mixes have included the Bellicose Minds, whose new LP The Spine is due out any day now; as well as Germany’s Tanzkommando Untergang — but is meant as a starting point for your own exploration.

From Germany With Love Part II
Curated by Ralph From Planks
Mar 2013 08

I know we’ve said it a lot today, but we are so thankful for the support we have gotten from the metal/punk/heavy communities around the world, and someone who has been a great friend to CVLT Nation is Ralph from Germany’s PLANKS. So when we were thinking of the mixtapes we wanted to bring you today, we automatically thought to ask Ralph to make a Part II to his killer From Germany With Love mixtape that he did for us on our 1st Anniversary. So he did, and compiled a list of some of Germany’s best and heaviest to date! You can stream below, and download after the jump…genießt!!

This is the second installment of my mix made of bands located in Germany. Thanks to Sean for inviting me to do it. It is great to share some of the not too well known bands with a big channel of people who might find a new love on here. Most of these bands, if not all, live in this country and are very much aware of our history and responsibility. Non of these bands, as well as me, take pride in living in this country. This introduction is not meant as a political statements, as this was never my strength. But I want to make very clear that the German DIY Hardcore/Punk/Metal scene share at least two common denominators: No.1 is the passion they bring to the table. They do things 110% and with heartfelt spirit – No.2 is: Fuck Nazi Sympathy! It’s too common in many countries today (unfortunately also in Germany) to tolerate things as “ok” because a certain trend tries to legitimize it. Fuck that.
Now, please take your time and give every band on here a chance, as they all deserve it. This mix wanders from blasting Grind to modern Hardcore and back to Black Metal and Doom, so there should be something for everybody. -Ralph Planks- (March 2013)

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LXXXVII
Curated By Weapon
Mar 2013 01

Up for offer today is an awesome mixtape curated by Vetis Monarch of WEAPON, and it’s packed with tracks from some of CVLT Nation’s favorite bands! If you are too kvlt for skool, beware – this mix might rub you the wrong way – but we trust that our readers are going to love a lot of his choices! Read Vetis’ ironic intro below, and as usual stream below and download after the jump!

Narrowing down the bands that one doesn’t care for to a mere 20 is no easy task; especially in 2013, when there is so much to choose from… That’s not a good thing. Although I prefer to spend my energy on bands I like, it is quite entertaining to mention the bands that I personally have no use for, yet a lot of people seem to like them. Bear in mind that this is my taste only, and this doesn’t speak for all in Weapon (even though no one, anywhere, should ever listen to garbage like Mares Of Thrace.)

Enjoy, fuckers.

We will! Thanks!

CVLT Nation Label Series Mixtape Curated By Invictus Productions
Feb 2013 27

CVLT Nation is honored to bring you a mixtape curated by one of the premiere underground metal labels, Invictus Productions. Darragh has been bringing heavy and intense music to the world for over a decade from the beautiful land of Ireland, and he’s put together a brutal mix for you to stream and download after the jump! Read what he has to say below:

So, Invictus has been around for 14 years now, which even to my mind is fucking boggling! Being stuck on Craggy Island my entire life, competing within the ever-expanding sphere of underground metal was always a challenge, but I’d like to think that Invictus has more than lived up to it over the years. Looking back through the back catalogue, there has been a lot of different stuff come out in a few different styles, some of which jarred considerably with perceptions and ruffled the odd feather or two. Music is the essence of human expression and creativity, and art alone stands as a testament to passing times, ideas and idealism. Nothing is ever stagnant, life always changing. In picking the tunes I have, I did it without second-guessing myself and I want to let the music do the talking. If you dig the releases and support the label, I cannot extend my gratitude to you enough. It has been a rollercoaster ride these last 14 years, with many peaks and troughs, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way – so let the music do the talking here and see what ya think!
