When I started doing these deathrock mixtapes in early 2012, my point was to illustrate that guitar-driven, dark punk in the deathrock tradition was alive and well, still evolving, despite some folks’ stubborn perception of this genre as being “old school.” (And, actually, as a genre that came into its own in the 80s, it’s younger than industrial or some other types of dark music.) Like the broader genre categories of rock ‘n roll, country, or even the blues, the deathrock subgenre is indeed “old school,” and also like those types of music, it isn’t.
So, here’s yet another new assortment of bands, including tracks by what I call “legacy” dark (post-)punk bands like UK Decay, Killing Joke, and The Damned, bands that are still alive and well and who are still cranking out surprisingly good new material. Among the newer bands, Finland has a strong showing here: Masquerade and Silent Scream reassert the primacy of Scandinavia in this genre; and new 12 inchers by bands like Belgrado, Deathcharge, Catholic Spit, and others also reaffirm the innovation that continues in this style of dark music.
This deathrock mix is not meant as an exhaustive or definitive or authoritative compilation. It’s supposed to serve as a springboard for your own sonic exploration. Some of these bands may not consider themselves to be “deathrock” at all; Arctic Flowers, for example, describe their sound as “a mix of punk, deathrock, post punk, and goth.” All of the songs below resonate strongly with, and are relevant to, the development of deathrock/goth-punk/gothic rock in the modern era as a whole, however.
Tracklist below the jump cut. Enjoy.

CVLT Nation is stoked to release Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXIV by VATTNET VISKAR today! This is their 2nd mixtape for us, and we thought it was fitting for them to do a part two since their epic new album, Sky Swallower, is out via Century Media Sept. 3rd in the US and Sept. 9th in Europe. Plus they will be touring the month of September, so check the dates below! So in preparation, sit back, hit play and download!
For our second CVLT Nation mixtape, we wanted to explore a bit. Picking songs that influence us in specific ways is never an easy task, but we came up with something we’re very proud of. We chose these songs as a representation of influences we drew from during the writing and recording process of Sky Swallower. Music is emotional, and emotional cues can be taken from any musical source. Like our last mix, much of this isn’t metal.

The Punk is Dead Fest is happening on August 30th & 31st in Lancaster, CA! Ticket info here and flyer below! Now enjoy the PIDF mixtape exclusively for CVLT Nation!
The original idea behind Punk Is Dead was to create a powerviolence fest in the vein of Super Sabado Gigante and Fiesta Grande for the new century. But from the seed of a powerviolence/grind fest it grew into a true heavy music festival featuring bands from every subgenre and scene. It includes some of the best up-and-coming local talent, established touring acts, even a couple international bands. From hardcore to crust to doom to death metal, all bases are covered.
This mixtape reflects such diversity. On this mixtape you will find a sampling of what you will find both days of Punk Is Dead. The unrelenting speed of Godstomper and ACxDC, the heady experimentalism
of Vestiges, the oppressively bleak blackened doom of Primitive Man, and the fearless brutality of Skinfather.
Each song offers up something unique, so your ears will never find themselves bored. Feel free to download and enjoy and if you like what you hear, come out to Lancaster on Labor Day weekend and experience it live.

Today CVLT Nation is stoked to bring you Sonic Cathedrals Vol XCII Badr Vogu!!! Stream and download below!!
For our mixtape we decided to choose only bands that we felt were influences on Badr Vogu’s sound. We all have pretty eclectic tastes in music as is evidenced in our selections which range from punk to blues to black and death metal to hip-hop. We also intentionally left out more current bands, friend’s bands, etc. as we could each easily curate our own mix-tape just with the amazing crop of bands we have here in the bay area not to mention the rest of the international scene. We hope that most of these bands are recognizable to most of y’all out there and if they aren’t you need to do some homework!
