https://www.facebook.com/jorge.f.silva/photos_albums
Based in: Porto, Portugal

ONE

On the first edition of Amplifest – a still relatively new festival in my hometown, who will have the third edition this year – Justin Broadrick did a double stint headlining the first day of the festival with Jesu and then, the second day, as Godflesh.

While Jesu were playing I noticed a light, placed behind and above Justin, that, from time to time, was casting strong lightbeams on his head. As I was shooting right in front of him, the light came and I was able to get the shot I was envisioning. It always amuses me the fact the I shot Justin as Jesu with a halo!

TWO

After having to cancel all of their European shows on the spring of 2011, Yob ended up playing the promised portuguese gig in October of that same year.

Mike Scheidt has quite a great presence on stage and, just before this photo was taken, he had already outstretched his arms striking an epic pose but the shot didn’t end up to my liking. Then, mid song, he raises his arms above his head and goes all triumphant. Most of the time I just call this image “doooom!!!” and it ranks high on my favourites.

THREE

The show was announced very near the date it took place but, as soon as I found out, I did not want to lose the chance of seeing 16 live.

Cris Jerue is one of those tortured vocalists onstage and I like a lot this moment when I snapped the shot that looks like a pause for meditation just before he got back to punishing the mic again, and again. Adding to the atmosphere of “suspended moment” is the fact that I shot with a combination of flash and slow speed shutter, making it seem almost like a double-exposure (it is not!) where the better defined body parts seem to float.

FOUR

Bohren & der Club of Gore like to present their brand of “jazz doom” playing on completely darkened stages, with just the exception of the lights placed directly above each one of the members. This adds to the aura of nightclub and, trying to portray that, I made sure to catch their sax player, with his shape more guessed than actually seen.

FIVE

This one was taken during the third time I shot Russian Circles and it’s one of those situations where my favourite photo of the set was not taken during a song, but between.

Dave Turncrantz is one hell of a drummer and here, while his partners in crime were tuning their instruments, he started peeling loose skin from his fingers with his teeth. I just could not help but capture the moment!

SIX

Lobster are/were a portuguese band who, whenever they played, always decided to set up their stuff not on stage, but on the ground in the middle of the crowd.

I always like to try out new compositions and angles and, in this one, as I was tired of shooting them “in your face” due to the proximity, I decided to stand on top of a chair and shoot from above. As I put myself in position to do so, I noticed the writing on the pedalboard: “do not fear death”, and decided to make it the main focus of my photo with the guitar player becoming just a shadow.

SEVEN

When I found out that Throbbing Gristle were scheduled to play in my hometown in the November of 2010 I barely could believe it! I was finally going to be able to witness the industrial legends live…

As it turned out, just days before the show, Genesis P-Orridge decided to quit the band putting the rest of the tour in jeopardy. The three remaining members decided to go ahead and do the remaining of the tour performing under the moniker X-TG which, for everyone in the room, stood for “Ex-Throbbing Gristle”.

Among the many photos I took during the concert, this one I took of Peter Christopherson remains my favourite of the night. Something that gained a new importance to me when, just a few months after the show, “Sleazy” passed away which made this one of his last performances.

These two pics are from a show in Victoria, BC, Canada. Went over there to see a friend, went to a show that Open Relationship, Lunch, and Young Dad (band pictured in 005) played.

This is of the band Tempest at the Zoo Zhop. One of my favourite shows I’ve been to this year. The crowd and energy was rad.

SIX

This is a photo of a friend, with “Don’t Try” written on her. She had an idea that revolved Charles Bukowski and I had camera and film, so we went out and shot a bunch of photos that reflected on her idea. This one just happened to be my favourite of the bunch.

SEVEN

This is of my friend Tim, working on a guitar at his guitar studio called Anchor Guitars. It’s a great place where he repairs as well as builds guitars.

ONE

I collect weapons. Currently I have 12 knives/swords and a shield. This is my friend Emma Sheridan with 2 fake handguns that belong to my also weapon-obsessed housemate. She’s an amazing artist and one of my favourite people ever.

TWO

Stanley Schtinter and I exhibited our collaborative film work (He composes all the sound for my films and often features in them too) at an old police station in 2011, with a film in each cell. This is my film Dread Majesty ( http://vimeo.com/24752395 ) seen through the cell doors spy grate, the optimum viewing position.

THREE

This is a print from the 16mm negative of this film ( http://vimeo.com/32872845 ) I was deeply obsessed with Georges Bataille at the time. I love printing from 16mm but it’s toilsome, there is an exclusive circle of hell reserved for untangling celluloid.

FOUR

L and I were at the coast taking photographs. It was flash pouring torrential rain and we hid under this dock to hide, but it was raining harder under there than out in the open. Trapped, slipping whilst we were forced to crawl out, it was hell.

FIVE

This was taken whilst filming this ( http://vimeo.com/24832518 ) Early on a winter morning with lots of whiskey. He has such an amazing face.

SIX

These are two of my ‘muses’ together. On the day we did these photographs I’d bought them three bottles of wine. S shaved his head, whilst crooning to Sinatras My Way and we spent the whole day in my attic photographing.

SEVEN

I’ve tried three times to create a selection of still life style photographs and have suffered a film fatality each time. This is the only image thats survived. I guess it’s just not for me.

DEAFHEAVEN – 13 May 2012 @ Musicbox, Lisbon
A cool Lisbon night gave me the chance to actually start some dialogue with George Clarke after Russian Circles performance. His great acessibility can’t relate with his presence on stage, though. Leading an entire wolf pack howl on vocals, he did one hell of a frontman while hiding in the dark. He turned out to reveal his feelings and I couldn’t avoid to shoot the key of how unique Deafheaven can be with such physical maneuvres.

ULVER – 19 November 2011 @ Musicbox, Lisbon
First of all: their stage here looked ridiculous. Six performers and their massive tools were too much for the small Musicbox standards, but Ulver gave what they always have. As Kristoffer Rygg was smoking and looking badass, Daniel O’Sullivan led a improvisation section on ‘Darling, Didn’t We Kill You?’ for more than ten minutes. On his tiny castle he slayed the dragon playing with fire high and low on the guitar right after me.

RISE AND FALL – 29 April 2012 @ Revolver Bar, Almada
Probably the very first chaotic lineup my camera witnessed. A fast explosion of A Thousand Words, a death n’ roll lesson from We Are The Damned and a aggressive blast of For The Glory set the venue on fire for Rise And Fall. A monstrous drummer, a an angry bassist and a fucking amazing frontman to destroy what was left of the crowd… but these things seemed minimal side by side with the furious and flaming riffs from Cedric on the guitar. Totally nailing it.

CULT OF LUNA – 29 January 2013 @ Paradise Garage, Lisbon
If this one was a song, it would be ‘I: The Weapon’. Not only they were performing it but also their lighting and synchronized headbanging were massively good. As if there was something to carry on their backs Cult Of Luna left the entire venue heads going down to the ground. I’m pretty sure I could create a legend: some say people were throwed to the wall on this night. At least mentally speaking.

PROCESS OF GUILT – 26 March 2010 @ Moita Metal Fest
This is a old one and still one of my favourites. Hugo Santos is always an iconic shadowplayer and their moving “Erosion” album had this covered side of their humanity. While the light was quite strong to fill the head of lava exploiting guitar, the man behind them was just standing there on the dark. Probably the first time I linked photography to musicianship.

SIX

MONO – 22 February 2013 @ Paradise Garage, Lisbon
If the Japanese band had visuals, their live performance would be taken to a whole new level. But still, they are amazing live. What they do is unique and their overdriven leads can smash an entire audience, specially if Takaakira decides to do something different from the rest of the band. Knees to the floor and a fantastic way to leave a guitar to play only with effect pedals: just before that he turns his Fender Jaguar upside down just like our brains.

SEVEN

NASUM – 3 August 2012 @ Vagos Open Air
I know it isn’t really Nasum without Mieszko, but Keijo Niinimaa was the perfect replacement for a farewell tour. In honor to Mieszko they delivered one of the most stunning performances in a special slot of the festival Vagos Open Air playing after the headliners – At The Gates. What can you expect of Nasum when At The Gates cut your skin at 2am? The crowd was tired (really?) so only half of the fest stayed up for this lovely lullabye. Underground-ly speaking they were «only some legendary band» playing up there. As for me it was remarkable to add their name to my curriculum and to witness their last call.

Chelsea Wolfe

Chelsea is so beautiful that she would make for great photos even if she wasn’t playing at all. That’s why I tried to catch a few more relaxed shots of her during this show – right before the start of the concert, in between songs, just catching little details that sometimes pass you by when you’re looking for that one good “publishable” shot. I’m such a huge fan of her music that sometimes it was difficult to not just pack the camera and join the rest of the entranced crowd that filled the room completely.

TWO

Trap Them

After years of attending Roadburn, I finally saw a moshpit, and it took the unstoppable power of Trap Them to achieve it. The conditions we have to work in sometimes are difficult to explain to “regular” photographers, even music photographers that work in other areas of music. Like when you’re up front with no photo pit, no barriers and no security people, and you have kids (and grown men and women too!) moshing uncontrollably all around you and flying recklessly right above your head every five seconds. That was exactly the case during this whole show, and I loved every second of it.

THREE

Celeste

I’m proud of this one, because Celeste is one of the most difficult bands in the world to take photos of. They play in complete darkness, save for the little red lights on their foreheads, with the occasional burst of strobe lights. Most of the time you can’t see what’s going on with your own eyes, let alone through the camera lens, so either you get really lucky during the strobes or you flash the hell out of it and hope for the best. This was one of my very few salvageable photos of the entire show, but it caught the moment perfectly, vocalist Johan allowing himself a moment of peace, leaning on the drumkit with his eyes closed, as the chaos of Celeste’s music raged on around him. The thick, dark atmosphere they create is awesome – this show was played on an otherwise beautiful setting, inside a circus tent, on a grassy field, at the end of a sunny afternoon in Karlsruhe, but during Celeste’s performance, it was midnight in hell all the time.

FOUR

The Secret

Trap Them might have encouraged the first Roadburn moshpit, but The Secret, playing later on the same day, weren’t too far behind. April 15th 2011 was dark hardcore heaven, and the Italians blasted the hell out of the even smaller Bat Cave room. Some bands have such a strong image that it’s easy to get good shots of them, and The Secret are a good example of that. The intensity in their expressions, the tattoos all over, the fucking huge goat in the background – you basically just have to point and shoot. While avoiding the moshers and the stagedivers, of course.

FIVE

Neurosis

Neurosis enforce a strict no-flash policy at their shows and they use projections that reflect on their faces during the whole gig, so this photo is another good example of some of the challenges we have to face sometimes. This was taken during the very first time I got to see them live, and the spiritual connection I have with this band is huge, so the photos I have of this show mean quite a lot to me.

SIX

Black Breath

This photo symbolizes a lot of what I like in music these days. Black Breath aren’t remotely original, they have no frills and no pretense, they’re just up there to headbang and to have a good time with some kickass death’n’roll tunes. And it works.

SEVEN

Amenra

It’s funny, my music tastes often lead me to bands that present several problems when playing live. Amenra are another of the “difficult” ones. Utter darkness, vocalist with his back to the audience for the whole time… but the music is so powerful and it hits you in the gut so much that if you can capture even a fraction of that viscerality in your photos, you’ve got it made. Even if it’s a lucky break, like this one, where I caught someone else’s flash. I wasn’t carrying one with me on this occasion and I had been struggling to get something decent out of it, and this bit of good fortune allowed me to immortalize a particularly heavy riff moment. This explosive show at Roadburn was one of the shows of my life, and I can’t wait to see them again.

Deafheaven
I chose this as my first photo because it’s from the first show I ever shot. I didn’t know anything about cameras back then, so I just took a camera from my college newspaper and tried explaining what I thought the light would be like to an editor who then set the settings. At the time deafheaven was really smalltime – they were on the verge of hitting it big, but at that moment they were playing to something like eight people on a Sunday at a rinky dink venue in the Valley. I like this picture because it’s at a crossroads for me personally and for the band: me as I’m discovering photography and music photography in particular, and them in that within a year they’d be doing their first European tour and would soon become darlings of the critical underground.

TWO

Thrash dude
This photo was taken at a house show in South Central. I think it embodies just how stagnated (in a good way) music culture can be, especially in LA: you’ve got the tall can, leather jacket, Converse shoes, Dan Lilker hair…to me it’s the total package of 1980s thrasher. Fun fact from this show: afterwards a friend and I walked around the area, and I chatted up a hooker about her life while my friend gave her “co-worker” a piggy-back ride down Figueroa.

Night Fever
This was taken in Copenhagen, Denmark in fall of 2011 when I studied abroad there. I was a douche bag anti-flash purist at the time (and to a degree still am), so I relied a lot on whatever light was available. This was combined with the fact that the Nikon I had then wasn’t that great at auto-focusing, so the combination of using manual focus without flash meant I was taking several hundred photos in the hopes that a) it’d be in focus b) the lights would be in a position to actually illuminate the subject at that moment and c) something interesting was happening worthy of photographing. Combine that with getting crushed into the stage by the Danish pit of crusties, and it was just a combination of luck and trial and error and perseverance. Sometimes it works out though, and I’m proud of this picture.

FOUR

Anders
This photo was also taken in Copenhagen, and it’s of my dear dear dear friend Anders Andersen with a woman from a Swedish crust band whose names escapes me. The photo was taken in a place called Ungdomshuset – Danish for “the youth house” – which is a government provided, punk-run venue in CPH that hosts extreme music shows. Anders took me under his wing after I met him at Ungdomshuset, and he taught me a lot about Copenhagen/Euro punk and the way of life. I am forever indebted to him, so this picture has a lot of sentimental value to me.

FIVE

Alcest
This photo, of French shoegaze/blackish metal band Alcest, was taken back in April of this year, and the process of taking it is perhaps more interesting than the actual picture. Their show was at a 21+ venue in Long Beach, and I was only 20 at the time. I wasn’t going to pass up seeing Alcest, however, so I borrowed my then-roommate’s ID and went with ten dollars in my pocket with the hopes that I’d get into the show. It sounds like it’d be an easy thing, but the problem was that my roommate was an Asian guy from Hawaii, while I am very much your typical white boy. Luckily the ruse worked and I experienced Alcest’s soundscapes in all their reverb dripping glory. Highlight from that show: the random girl next to me crying midway through their set.

SIX

Peter
I met Peter at a house show in East LA. I was with a friend in the backyard of the house, and while we were walking around we heard someone drunkenly repeat “he hit him with a hammer” over and over. We found Peter lying on the ground in a Despise You shirt with an empty 40, and we convinced him to lead us to a taco truck. On the way there (when he wasn’t stopping every 15 feet because his leg was hurt from having dropped a keg on it), he explained to us the story of how one person he knew killed his friend by hitting in the head with a hammer, then put the body in a dumpster before fleeing for Las Vegas. In other news, the tacos were delicious.

SEVEN

1349
I took this back in June of this year when I saw 1349 play, and the dead carcass of a cat I found on my front lawn that morning seemed like an appropriate homecoming for a Norwegian black metal band. Well, it wasn’t a full carcass: it was actually just two dismembered legs of an orange tabby cat, and in between them was a collar. Its name was Boots. It was probably killed by a coyote that then decided my front lawn would be a nice place to leave behind some bloodied legs, and every time I look at this photo I can’t help but see two fly-covered cat legs.

Photographer: Sarah Rosalena Brady
Based in: San Francisco

ONE

I am strongly influenced by the paradigm of alchemy as a device in art, in particular, the power of altering symbolic language through images. By symbolic language, I mean how a sign functions in the mind of an interpreter to convey a specific meaning in any given situation. Most of my art uses semiotics or symbols to deconstruct their symbolic meaning, conveying a powerful unconscious message to our programmed minds. Ideological rituals and gestures carry much weight and can trigger our cognition to our unconscious and unknown self, most things we can’t comprehend. I guess this is where the afterlife and the supernatural come into play. This photo was taken as a series in 2011 when I went to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico for Semana Santa. Every day they would parade a certain saint or deity through out the town. It was intense. Old Spanish churches were filled to the ceiling with flowers and sacred herbs. People even dressed as devils at night and whipped you in the street if you’re weren’t home or in church. Semana Santa also is during Spring Solstice. Many indigenous practices came into play around the concepts of birth, motherhood, and fertility. This photo of the Virgin Mary was taken on Holy Saturday before she was paraded in the street. Her religious iconography is cathatic or muti-layered with image of Mexican mother goddess Tonantzin. The water represents the conducting interference between them.

TWO

This photo was inspired by my best friend, Sigrid Sheie, metal goddess of Hammers of Misfortune. She has definitely been a muse for a lot of my work. We met playing in Amber Asylum. My family on my mother’s side is deer clan, believing that they are descendants of deer. In ceremonial dances deer antlers and hooves are worn.

THREE//FOUR//FIVE

The next three images are representations of the whiting stage in the magnus opus called the albedo. The magnus opus is an alchemical term for the stages of chemical color changes and laboratory practices, but has also been used for describing personal and spiritual transmutations. I wanted to simply mention alchemy within the story to follow the process of transmutation, joining narrative with alchemical symbolism. Albedo “white stage” follows the chaos or massa confusa of the nigedo “black stage”. It washes away all impurities and brings spiritualization of the body. Carl Jung called the albedo, “where insight into shadow projections are realized, and inflated ego and unneeded conceptualizations are removed from the psyche”. The target of the albedo stage is to repossess purity and receptivity of the soul.

The angels are all from a cemetery at the Momias de Guanajuato (Mummies of Guanajuato) Museum in Guanajuato City, Guanajuato, Mexico. The skeleton I took last fall at a church in Wroclaw, Poland when Amber Asylum went for the X Art and Industrial Festival.

SIX

My background definitely impacted my perception and myself more than anything, including my art. My mother Maria is a Huichol and Pueblo medicine woman. Communicating with the ancestral world was a large part of my growing up and my spiritual upbringing. On my father’s side, my grandfather Brady was one top rocket engineers and physicists for Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California from the late 1940s till the 1980s. He also worked closely with Jack Parsons at CalTech and the beginning of JPL. Jack Parsons was also heavily connected with Aleister Crowley at the time, famous for invoking Pan before each test launch. Lets just say fascination with alchemy definitely stayed in the family, in particularly the magnum opus. I resemble him a lot in many ways. I love taking photos of the night sky because it makes me feel close to him. He passed away when I was a teenager. This photo was taken at Lola Montez Lake in the Tahoe National Forest. I am obsessed with Gold Rush heroine Lola Montez. She was a free independent spirit during one of the most confining times for women. Look her up. She’s amazing. The lake was named after her because she loved to camp in that area and go skinny-dipping.

SEVEN

My goal is to create visions and hallucinations that represent projections of the unconscious. Water is medium I use a lot to transmutate images. I am also strongly influenced by the works of Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, Luis Bunuel, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergei Parajanov, and Alejandro Jodorowsky.

EPILOGUE

Photographer: Max Hale

Site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maxhalephotography/

Based in: Sydney, Australia

These images have been taken through various venues in Australia over the past four years. In that time, I have been drawn to the dark alternative scene and found my roots in local black metal. There are a lot of great bands and, as a photographer, they appeal due to their presence on-stage. My mission has been to connect with these Australian bands’, and some international ones, in a way that presents the reality of their performances.

ONE

Portal, 2010, The Bald Faced Stag, Sydney

I have shot Portal a few times now and they are a treat to shoot because of how they dress and perform on stage. Some people may not think there is much to taking a good gig shot but it is all about the moment. Being so immersed within the music to feel that moment and know when to shoot. This photo was taken when Portal played inSydneyat the start of 2010. The reason I picked this particular photo is the lighting. Given the fact that they were all wearing black robes, I feel it added colour to what was a darkly brilliant performance.

TWO

The Amenta, 2010, Valve Bar, Sydney

The Amenta have always been one of my favourite bands, both of their albums have been just incredible. I first saw them live back in 2007. But it was not until 2009, when they toured for the n0n album that I started to photograph them. I now have quite an extensive collection of images from that era of the bands history. The photo I’ve chosen was only taken last year, at the Valve Bar inSydney. There was very little lighting at the show so I did a lot of tweaking with my camera settings and went in blind fire. The result? This image. When I edited my camera the day after the gig and found this one, I was pleased with the way it turned out.

THREE

Erebus Enthroned, 2011, Valve Bar, Sydney

The feel of evil is alive in this photo. On this particular night, I wanted to try and get something new, as it was a really special night for the band. They were launching their album, and having followed the band since they began, I knew it would be quite a show. I experimented a lot with different shutter speeds and camera shake, looking for ways to create something different. I love the way the vocalist’s arm is kind of in two separate places at the same time. Keep an eye on this band, they are getting stronger and stronger all the time.

FOUR

Spire, 2011, The Globe, Brisbane. (4th)

Relatively new on the black metal scene, Spire are one of the new Australian bands that are creating a great name for themselves with two EP releases already. I was thankful to see them play live at the end of last year. The set was a wall of noise fused with blackened sounds and the atmosphere was electric. The photo has a creepy feel about it, as if you are seeing something in a horror movie – or perhaps a ringwraith.

FIVE

Deathstars, 2009, Manning Bar, Sydney

This photo is one of my all time favourites. Part of the reason for this is they were one of the first bands I was able to shoot for a website. Most venues/bands stick with the first three-song rule. Three songs in and I was still there shooting. So I went for it. This image was captured towards the end of their set. They were drenched in sweat and truly euphoric with exhaustion. That was the special moment for me.

SIX

Nazxul, 2009, Manning Bar, Sydney

If you lived in Australiain the ‘90s and were into metal then you would definitely heard of Nazxul. This shot was taken at their 2009 return show for the release Iconoclast. At first I thought it would be on the scrap pile. But after viewing it a few times, I became really drawn to it because it looks so mysterious. To me that is what Nazxul are all about.

SEVEN

Absu, 2012, Sandringham Hotel, Sydney

Since I started photographing live musicians, I’ve always found it a real pain to get a good shot of a drummer with the lens I use. Occasionally I take one that really works. Here I was able to do it with the fantastic Proscriptor fromUSlegends Absu. Given their history and the mark they have left on the metal scene, to be able to not only see them live but also to add them to my portfolio was an honour.

THE ADICTS. Jaxx – Springfield, VA: 03/2011

This venue is a little more than an hour away from Richmond, VA, where I live, and driving up there was a painful experience. It’s in the weirdest almost strip-mall type environment in what seemed like the middle of nowhere cause we got turned around so many times due to construction and one too many “ROAD CLOSED” signs. Plus, I was the one driving and if you ask anyone that knows me, I get turned around real easily to begin with. Already tired & delirious, “Hey Jack! The ROAD’S CLOSED!” quickly became a hilarious inside joke, which, reiterating now… doesn’t sound too funny at all. But that’s what happens in a car full of girls who have been on the road for over an hour, going to see a band that makes them feel like they’re 15 all over again. Anyhow, the Adicts were definitely worth the hassle. They put on an amazing show & ended with bubbles & beach balls & streamers. There was confetti & glitter all over me by the end of the night & my friends and I somehow ended up being the obnoxious girls on the floor after everyone had started to clear out. Some guy asked to take a picture with me & whoever he was probably still has it on his camera. And, as most obnoxious girls get their way, we ended up hanging out with the Adicts in their tour RV afterwards & drinking their Heinekens while they lounged around in their pajamas.
AGHAST. Alley Katz – Richmond, VA: 02/2009

This was taken at Alley Katz, before it was called Kingdom, during the second Kollapse Fest (which, sadly, no longer takes place. It only went on for 3 years but helped continue to bring the Richmond punk scene to the attention of so many people.) I love this photo just cause it’s not of the band, but anyone who’s seen Aghast live or knows Shravan personally knows about their thing with frogs. I don’t remember who it is in this exact picture that got to wear the mutant frog suit, but seeing him surf the crowd in it was a lot of fun. I was upstairs during this whole particular set so I was able to get a lot of fun crowd shots.
CULT OF YOUTH. St. Vitus – Brooklyn, NY: 10/2011

This was the first time I’d heard Cult of Youth and I was really impressed. My boyfriend’s band, Dead Reich, was playing their first show with Anasazi, Cult of Youth & Lost Tribe so that was my chance to see them. I dropped my camera on the stage during Anasazi’s set that night, who had gone on right before, and it ended up breaking my built-in flash which I was pretty bummed about cause I didn’t have an external one yet. But the lighting at that venue was ideal, and the lights from the video they had playing were right on the singer & made for some really cool patterns so I was able to take advantage of that & not really need my flash at all (which I try not to use anyway when I can help it.)
A GLOBAL THREAT. Peppermint Beach Club – Virginia Beach, VA: 09/2006

This was one of the last shows AGT played before they broke up. I’m pretty sure a fight almost broke out at the end of this (The Casualties headlined) between some kids and the bouncers. Other than that, I don’t really remember much about this show, it was so long ago. But I love this picture for some reason & wanted it to be shared.
MOTÖRHEAD. Madison Square Garden – New York, NY: 01/2012

Motörhead!!!!!! I was so psyched to see them, I never had before. And some people still can’t believe we didn’t stay to see Megadeth, but I don’t really care for them. And I didn’t wanna get stuck in that crowd trying to leave that venue. We got there a little late and sadly missed out on the first couple songs they played, which made their already short set seem like it went by in seconds. But I’d still say it was worth it. Our seats were actually in the very back (and even still they were so expensive) but when we walked in and they were already playing, we just walked as far up as we could go before getting stopped by the guys working there. We ended up standing on the steps but visibility was no issue & we didn’t get asked to move. Pretty awesome.
NIGHTFALL. Alley Katz – Richmond, VA: 02/2009

This was also at Alley Katz during the second Kollapse Fest. This was the second night of the fest, I remember that for sure because this is one of the last shots I took all weekend. Mega Minge played after them & during their set, Josh, the singer, fell into his mic stand & it ended up falling on my face. I was able to save my camera but I remember feeling really dizzy & stunned from getting hit by the metal. When I reached up and touched my face, I felt blood & realized immediately that my nose didn’t feel right at all. I’d never broken a bone before so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but there was no doubt that my nose was broken. It was nearing the end of one of those drink-all-weekend-long experiences too & I’m sure my blood was thinned out a little from all the alcohol consumption and it was flowing out of me like crazy! I remember pushing through the crowd & dizzily making my way up the steps into the girls’ bathroom (labelled “pussy cats” on the door.) Then the last thing I remember is pushing open the bathroom door. Luckily my roommate / best friend was in there. I remember her having a somewhat horrified expression on her face. She asked me if I was okay. Then I blacked out and (she says) passed out on the floor. I don’t remember anything after that except waking up downstairs with her face hovering above mine and a crowd of people surrounding me. Mega Minge had to stop playing their set since their drummer (now the singer of Lost Tribe) drove me to the hospital & I’m sure more than half the people at the show had no idea what was going on. When I first started dating my boyfriend now, this story came up & he remembered it happening but didn’t know the details until he met me a couple years later. Crazy times.
WARCRY. The Acheron – Brooklyn, NY: 10/2011

Warcry was awesome. Sadly, there weren’t many people at this show. It was at the end of October, right before Halloween. I’d spent the week up in NY with my boyfriend for my birthday and the weather had been absolutely perfect. Then all of a sudden, the night of this show, we got about 3 inches of snowfall! Totally random & it definitely kept a lot of people indoors. I was dressed completely inappropriately, and I had fake blood all over my neck (I was a vampire victim for an early Halloween…. my boyfriend was gonna be the vampire but he didn’t wanna sing with vampire teeth in, understandable) which ended up just melting off & I (think I) smelled funny all night. It was awful.

Tony Iommi
Portrait of Tony Iommi at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn on November 3rd, 2011, the day of his US book release for Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell With Black Sabbath. This is where life gets magical for me. Sabbath was a staple in my household. They were my mom’s first concert. Some of my earliest memories were being freaked out by the green witch on my dad’s Black Sabbath record. I’ve seen as many documentaries I could get my hands on. Never would I have thought I’d be more than within a few thousand yards squinting to see him on stage. It was a Thursday afternoon in a part of Brooklyn that is doesn’t get much foot traffic during the day. On this day though, from afar, it looked like cast of ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’ lined up around the corner. As you walked up the door on the all black exterior with no sign out front was blasting all Black Sabbath tunes. He was kind. He smiled at everyone he met, shook hands, talked and signed copies of his book. As he was being ushered fans started yelling thank you and more joined in and just kept repeating it over and over again. I’ll always be grateful I was given the opportunity to meet the legend himself.
Photo of Stephen O’Malley thanking the crowd after the Sunn O)))/Boris collaboration, ‘Altar’, performance at the 2010 ATP Festival in New York. I was lucky enough to cover the ATP festival with Fred Pessaro on behalf of Brooklyn Vegan. I had been so excited for the day of this show. I had wanted to shoot them for years. So many wonderfully fucked up ideas were inspired by listening to them. Their collaboration with Boris was nothing short of mesmerizing both sonically and visually. I had always wanted to go back and re-edit this shot for my portfolio. It needed to be cleaned up and dodged and burned. It’s one of my new/old favorite shots.
Here Comes Trouble
*I was given permission to use this photograph on the basis that I clearly state that these gentlemen are of the working class skinhead fashion and not the shitty, racist kind. And now that we’ve got that cleared up: I was caught off guard when I walked into a room at a punk house and found these two guys. I was playing with my camera. As soon as I saw them the one threw his arms up and I shot. What I didn’t realize was that they were getting ready to push off.
Spirit Brother & his Dear
My parents dog I call Spirit Brother because he’s my spirit animal. My mom rescued him from where he was being held in a cage by a landlord of the owners who had run off, leaving him behind. Now he lives with them on a farm and has a whole mountain to hunt on. He comes home with dead animals all of the time. He doesn’t have a real name. My mom calls him Bud. I call him Brother for short.
