Imagine Poison Idea partying with Slayer while Discharge pukes in the kitchen sink and you might be able to conceive what’s going on Embrace The Hatred. The band’s second album (or EP?) was released by This Charming Man Records and features seven songs of ripping solos, often with fine twin-guitar harmonies and crazy mosh parts, carefully nestled in insanely fast palm-muted, thrashy riffs, topped by a voice that expresses more fuck you attitude than… hell I don’t even know anything that comes close to the minimum of fucks given here. And fortunately NOTHING don’t sound like one of those countless, awefully unoriginal Thrash revival bands the last years brought upon us. The band rather seems to be a bunch of really pissed punk ass motherfuckers who grew up on early C.O.C., D.R.I., Cro-Mags, Suicidal Tendencies etc. and internalized the mighty powers of Metal-PUNK full-on.

By the way, chances are big that the band’s members actually grew up on this shit, since all of them aren’t new to the game but spent the previous years in well-known Hardcore-Punk outfits. The lyrics speak of frustration and disillusion and it seems like quite some rage accrued during the guys’ years on planet earth. They settle a score with the scene, society, the past and basically everyone and everything – call it naïve but I can relate 100%.

The top-notch musical content of this release is backed by the outstanding artwork done by Dawid Piprek, which is a definite eyecatcher and the infamous icing on the cake. Bottom line is: NOTHING persuasively embrace the hatred with all middle fingers in the air and beer trickling down the chin, and they do it great. You might wanna join the party, don’t you?!

This last Friday I was just chipper as hell, so I showed up with just the right attitude for a dingy New Brunswick, New Jersey basement show featuring Altered Boys at the helm. It was about time I caught this band, whom I’d been sleeping on for the past three months, during which they’ve put out two self-titled 7″s through Deranged Records and Katorga, who have released material from the likes of Career Suicide, Broken Bones, and NJ favorites Ugly Parts.

Altered Boys – The Nudge

Sadly, they were sold out of everything, which mattered very little to me at the time, actually, because I’m broke as shit. Not too broke to own a computer, however (who isn’t?), so luckily I had already shamelessly borrowed their earlier 7″ (who wouldn’t…?).

Altered Boys – Who are you-

Out on the floor, their live set is like a fast, to the point asskicking, as a real hardcore set should be. No dumb speeches made by singer Geoff except to briefly thank the promoter, announce titles, and berate himself in between songs. Tracks like the elbow-thrasher “Timebomb” and the floor-stomper “Ugliness” will ensure a few bloody noses when you catch these guys live. I’d love to include photos from the set, but some great dickhead at BNB Bowl grabbed my phone during Kill Your Idols’ set the Sunday after this show. Maybe it was Geoff, actually.

That said, the music itself leaves nothing to be desired – I rarely even find the quality of music to be all that important to me depending on what the band is doing, but when it comes to punk and hardcore the only complaint I often have is with drummers. Some guys treat their drumsets like they’re made of – I dunno, glass, or marzipan or something – but drummer Tim’s loud and precise rhythm, along with Jeff’s disgusting bass tone, fills the tiny basement with a repeating waves of impact that the crowd eats up.

Altered Boys – Left Behind

While true to the genre (I guess), there is nothing vain about the point being made in these songs – it’s misanthropic, it’s critical, it’s purely negative, without any of that I-know-better vibe that sometimes finds its way into the hardcore punk message.

I don’t want to know what’s better; I prefer to find out what’s worse. Thanks, Altered Boys.

The band’s first full-length for Southern Lord Records, Manifest Decimation is eight tracks of nonstop circle-pitting thrash with some pretty heavy hardcore leanings at times, harkening classic thrash like Metallica and Nuclear Assault mixed with hardcore staples Cro-Mags and Leeway. Hell, even the production makes this album sound like you’d find it in a record store in 1985. The album starts off with the auditory maelstrom that is the title track, “Manifest Decimation”. Feedback and effects swirl together, creating a nerve-wracking preview of things to come. The song kicks in fast and frantic, with vocalist Riley Gale spitting angry and reverb-laden vocals. “Manifest Decimation” does just that: decimates anything in its path without mercy. “Heretic’s Fork” follows, serving as a perfect and thrashy second track for the album. Power Trip’s unrelenting attack does not let up in this song, and even incorporates a heavy breakdown in the latter half of the track.

“Conditioned To Death” starts out slow, offering listeners a little peace before being pummeled into submission once again. The song starts off with an intro heavily influenced by Metallica before offering forth more of Power Trip’s signature blend of crossover thrash and heavy hardcore. The song breaks for a savagely evil ending, evoking the band’s Big Four influences. “Murderer’s Row” continues the nightmare, this time offering a brutal mid-tempo attack coupled with a simple yet killer solo.

“Crossbreaker” kicks off the latter half of the album with a song that sounds straight out of the 80s and was specifically crafted for headbanging that leads to a broken neck. The track incorporates gang vocals over music that lands somewhere in Anthrax territory. “Drown” lands somewhere within that territory as well, with a slow and churning intro leading into the band’s trademark circle pit fury. The next to last track, the eponymous “Power Trip”, definitely shows the band’s crossover roots as it marches forth into the eye of the hurricane. The album’s closer, “The Hammer Of Doubt”, beings with a stressful and brooding guitar part coupled with a creepy sample then breaks right into the song without mercy. Clocking in at six and a half minutes, “The Hammer Of Doubt” is a great closer to Manifest Decimation, fading out into a textured atmosphere of synths.

If anyone ever questions the status of the crossover scene in 2013, kindly hand them a copy of this album and see if it doesn’t change their mind.
