It should come as no surprise that one of the most devastating crust/d-beat albums of 2012 comes from Spain – Barcelona to be exact. Anyone who is familiar with Europe’s crust movement knows that Spain has always been a stronghold of crust punk and anarchist punk. Might be the fact that fascism survived in Spain way longer than in the rest of Europe, or the fact that Spain is one of most Catholic countries in the world, but the truth is there is an underground that calls for the blood of the establishment and of narrow-minded morals, and takes the punk lifestyle and vision to next fucking level at any given chance. Nevertheless, if you take examples like Ekkaia, Ictus and Absurdo for instance, you will recognize in Spanish crust bands some obvious traits that make them stand out from the rest, mostly that crust punk is a serious matter and it seems to be more epic and incumbent, almost “militarized” in its tones, and dominated by a sense of urgency and alienation rarely seen elsewhere.

Instinto by Instinto

From this background hails Instinto, a quintet from Barcelona whose independently released self-titled debut screams vengeance all over the fucking place and declares a full-on war against the establishment with its merciless and disfiguring brand of crust/d-beat assault. This album literally howls with rage and is nothing short of a sonic riot in its own form. The songs are towering anthems of sour and rage, the production is spotless and the guitar tone is absolutely huge and as filthy as the smog and smoke infested skies of a dystopic slum turned upside down by raging riots. Think of Tragedy and From Ashes Rise and their beefy tones and apocalyptic moods, but with a stronger sense of urgency and a more savage delivery. There is also a nitid Behind Enemy Lines sonic silhouette as a backdrop in this work, which reinforces the pure pedigree this band beholds. That’s where Instinto stands, and their debut is packed to the fucking roof with heaviness and anger to the point of collapse, and the songs contained herein pave the way to a downright musical war zone, one blast of obliterating rage after another. The album has been out for a while and oh my, what a mistake it was to overlook it. Hit the play button on the player above and let this baby literally tear through your skull like a riot!

Review Source Equivoke

I’m still working back through my (and others’) 2012 list so those posts will get more regular between newer records, but for now another new and quick one. Florida’s Shit Luck just released a pretty damn enjoyable eight minutes with this demo and I think some people here will enjoy it. I definitely am despite this subgenre becoming a little watterlogged.

Creatively this is a couple of big steps up from their 2012 release Expired which, upon checking it out, showed promise but did not hint at the fairly intriguing mash-up that we find in the five songs here. Just on a base level this is louder, grittier, far more aggressive and full sounding, tighter with a more interesting approach to the whole YAITW blackened crust style.

They’re not breaking conventions but this four piece do push something refreshing to various degrees and I’m interested in where they’re going to take it. You can expect lots of feedback between tracks and raspy hoarse vocals, though here the vocalist is slightly outside the mold while spitting themes of alienation, apathy, bitterness. The down-tuned ashen riffs whirling onward through thick, muffled distortion creating a pretty bleak atmosphere. On the other end the drumming is competent, pretty tight snare and keeps shit together well but the kicks are pretty weak.

SLOW DEATH by SHIT LUCK

However like Dephosphorus they find a comfortable and rewarding zone where grind, crust, and black metal influences break apart and reform in energetic, satisfying and very heavy ways. Definitely more on the grind side of things but the brief excursions involving larger doses crust/blackened-etc. work in both the slower closes (“Slow Death”) and the galloping rhythms (“Maniputlate”) and compliment the furious attack found everywhere else.

You’re met with this immediately on the opener “Into The Chasm”, the opening riff and percussion taking after Dephosphorus to some degree before spilling into a series of blurred, crackling hardcore rhythms. It’s the title track and “Manipulate” that are the stand outs for sure though and are easily the best formulations of their sound — filth permeating the riffs and vocals and both ending with phenomenal, simple slowed sections. “Slow Death”‘s first half is grind ridden assault with hints of crust, and once you cross into the second half shit gets crushing as a torturous, dark section consumes you. “Manipulate” is the second boulder of this demo though where the formula found in the title track is repeated without losing steam and with a devastating effect.

This contrasts pretty starkly with “Waste” which follows, as it is nothing but a 28 second grind wildfire that drops all other masks. And to a large degree this is the case with “Timeless Grief” but this does not make them any less interesting. That latter track has some vicious chunks in it, the interruption in the final breakdown for a frightening roar combined with feedback beats you down bluntly. Overall the filthy storm of genres here is very effective and refreshing enough to set them apart from the pack.

So yes this is a fuckin’ wicked little demo cassette that is definitely worth a listen. Especially for those who are into the crusty black hardcore out there like Young And In The Way or Dephosphorus, or even Votnut, Hexis, Unsacred, etc. Shit Luck are probably ones to keep an eye on. The physical version of this is limited to 35 copies and only a few were sold online — only two are left on bandcamp so if you want to throw them $4 get on it. Otherwise it’s free.

This Melbourne outfit boasts a sound that reeks of the unclean purity that punk demands, fifteen tracks of the festering underbelly of society smothered in distortion. “Live Forever” compiles their vinyl-exclusive material in one skin-grating release, including their self-titled 12″, their contributions to their split with Isterismo and “Paranoid” 7″. These selections culminate into one shattering release featuring nothing but the most repulsive punk. Consider yourself pleased already.

Fallout by Kromosom

The ferocity here is palpable: this record wants to spit in your face, break in your teeth and put a cigarette out on you for the shit of it. Splendidly lo-fi, Kromosom have no qualms shifting the inaudibility to noxious levels. Of note here is the megaton “Fallout,” a gun-metal flourish that stands out as one of the best offerings on this compilation. As style goes, Kromosom’s is by-the-numbers, but executed with such raw bravado that it is not even noticeable. “Live Forever” is a culminated love letter by punk adherents, signed in illegible, nosebleed red. All the rage and all the fun, this inspired violence is consistent throughout. No breaks, with pleasure. “Living Dead” is sleek but rusted, a war cry carried on bloody knuckled riffs that strike with unapologetic speed. Southern Lord, expanding on their now rather eclectic roster, were even more the wise selecting Kromosom for extraction. “Live Forever” is worth every unpleasant second it slams into you. Effervescent, ravenous and unabashedly classic, Kromosom’s discography is a gratefully accepted marvelous, pungent bouquet of “fuck yous.”

England’s CORRUPT MORAL ALTAR are about to unleash another slap of totally fucked up Grind/Sludge/Death Metal madness upon their willing disciples in the embodiment of a 7″ titled Whiskey Sierra. Just as the name professes I assume all of the material was created under the influence of quite some booze and probably a bunch of other substances as well. And this shows not only in the naming but also in the headache provoking music that is taking only the heaviest, sickest bits of every genre that is already extreme in itself.

By doing so CMA perfectly pursue what they also did on the previous (and excellent) Luciferian Deathcult EP, except that these four obviously very angry men became even tighter and heavier, making Whiskey Sierra an absolutely convincing release that should please the ’83 Napalm Death shirt sporting 40-something guy as much as the 15 year old dude who only recently got introduced to Spazz by his older brother.

The four songs of Whiskey Sierra get straight to the point, hit you in the face, kick the shit out of you and disappear as fast as they came, leaving you as a bloody wreck begging for more. In about ten and a half minutes CMA do really everything it takes to tear your shiny happy world apart. The down-tempo’ish, sludgy parts are wisely placed and mostly leave you only a few seconds to breathe before one of these really ridiculous fast blast-beats bevels your skullcap or a 10.000 ton breakdown beats your head onto the concrete floor. If you still don’t have enough, the dual vocal assault makes sure you feel completely fucked. The high screams ultimately sound like a buch of rusty nails onto a blackboard. Nice eh?

Whiskey Sierra by Corrupt Moral Altar

What’s really remarkable about this unhealthy mixture is that CMA have in down like not too many other bands to make all this sound very coherent. At no point you have the feeling that Whiskey Sierra sounds put on or strangely constructed. It’s more like CMA found a way to melt down over 30 years of extreme music and turn it into a merciless, unforgiving sonic mayhem. Try this at your own risk.

This 7″ EP is up for pre-order via Dead Chemist Records.

Consisting of members from well known crust bands Stormcrow (Tony and Brian) and Sanctum (Nick). Femacoffin from Oakland, California keep the original heavy crusty death metal approach to their music like their previous bands. Through the doomy hecatomb, there are strains of bands like Bolt Thrower and Misery. The term ‘warcrust’ has been knocked about for this kind of Bolt Thrower styled crust, which bands like Last Legion Alive, Warmaster and of course Stormcrow and Sanctum play so well. But I don’t know will the term stick around as it’s not as hated as the other much hated term there called “stenchcore”. But hey it’s another new term we can knock around and annoy everyone who hate words like “neo-folk”, “blackened crust”, “neo-crust”, “Cascadian black metal” etc. I personally don’t care what it’s called, I just love real heavy well played filthy musick so I could listen to this on repeat all day. These are crusty punks playing death metal but with a political vent which for me gives it the extra kick in the arse. The band themselves have tagged it on Bandcamp as punk-crust-death metal-decay-sadness which I think describes the sound quite well.

I can’t wait for their five song cassette demo which is in the works, which I’m sure will be as heavy as a ton of bricks… doomy crust ridden bricks that is.

Like many Southern European states, Portugal got hit by the world financial crisis really big time. Debts, inflation, insecurity and unemployment especially affect younger people who are now going through some extremely difficult times. As fucked up as this situation is, it seems to be an ideal breeding ground for angry music – the new record by the Portuguese Grind-heads UTOPIUM is a perfect proof for that.

Vicious Consolation / Virtuous Totality delivers 18 raging tracks of Grindcore madness that doesn’t stay away from interspersing bits of Crust and Sludge. The final outcome is some of the most unadulterated, heavy musical brutality you’ll hear in a while. Bands like the mighty Nasum or Rotten Sound might have been a prime influence, but UTOPIUM are so full of piss and vinegar and tight musicianship that they really don’t need any comparisons.

The band combines the light speed attacks typical for Grindcore with a bit of groove here and there, but without sounding like some slam-death-crap. VC/VT for sure isn’t a very subtle record; it’s brutal, hard, direct and merciless and powerful enough to let whole buildings collapse. And since most Grindcore fanatics aren’t exactly on the lookout for the most sensitive, complex music, this record should be perfectly right for them.

The production is pretty killer as well, the guitars sound thick and heavy, the growls are really pissed but not ridiculously deep and the drumming keeps pushing the whole thing ceaselessly forward. And the riffs these guys pull off are definetely way above the average.

So if you dig Scandi Grind like Nasum or Rotten Sound or the classics like Terrorizer‘s World Downfall you definetely should check out UTOPIUM‘s Vicious Consolation / Virtuous Totality. This is a total rager.

Heavy beauty, melodic dissonance and uplifting d-tuned sonic food for the human condition are the thoughts that come to my mind as I listen to the new PRAY FOR TEETH song “Swallow The Ground.” This song is DIY blues, not in a straight ahead sense, but because the way it was written touches my being in the same way that a Son House song would. PRAY FOR TEETH has created an epic performance video to go along with this mammoth 11 minute anthem, and we have the honor of premiering it today! You can pre-order the cassette HERE which is being released by Lock & Key Collective, plus they have a new 7 inch entitled I’m Still Finding Feathers In My Hair coming out via our comrades Root of Evil Collective which you can pre-order HERE!
