“Soft Skull” opens with a sheen of discomfort, blasting off into a dirty ride that charges into ever-shifting cascades of accelerating torment. Screams of varying pitch and clarity form a mournful, ghostly chorus that accents the blistering percussion and scum-under-your-fingernails guitars. The bass mean mugs, out-muscling all but the torturous wails, attributing “Soft Skull” as the split’s most menacing track.

“Debt” is all speed on furious wheels, ripping through its sixty-second length without breaking into so much as a bead of slime. Shouts rage beneath the maelstrom sound, unleashing theological obscenities in pained bursts.

Attitude-thick bass lines hammer into you almost immediately on the formidable “Hell Hog.” A snout-pummeling reward of snarling guitars, cadence ravaging drums and bloody cries wreak utter sonic havoc, ending Bible Thumper’s killing spree with a satisfyingly mad grimace.

The ferocity here is palpable: this record wants to spit in your face, break in your teeth and put a cigarette out on you for the shit of it. Splendidly lo-fi, Kromosom have no qualms shifting the inaudibility to noxious levels. Of note here is the megaton “Fallout,” a gun-metal flourish that stands out as one of the best offerings on this compilation. As style goes, Kromosom’s is by-the-numbers, but executed with such raw bravado that it is not even noticeable. “Live Forever” is a culminated love letter by punk adherents, signed in illegible, nosebleed red. All the rage and all the fun, this inspired violence is consistent throughout. No breaks, with pleasure. “Living Dead” is sleek but rusted, a war cry carried on bloody knuckled riffs that strike with unapologetic speed. Southern Lord, expanding on their now rather eclectic roster, were even more the wise selecting Kromosom for extraction. “Live Forever” is worth every unpleasant second it slams into you. Effervescent, ravenous and unabashedly classic, Kromosom’s discography is a gratefully accepted marvelous, pungent bouquet of “fuck yous.”

With the first of the three tracks comes “From Womb to Tomb” right from the start you’re hit in the face with some pummeling  d-beat goodness and that all too familiar buzzsaw guitar tone that’s instantly associated with Swedish Death Metal. Honestly it sounds like something that came out of the depths of Sweden via the early 90s but with a modern production behind it but doesn’t take away from the material at all (for me as lame as it may sound to some production can really make or break a release). It’s actually done quite well here in my opinion. Then next comes the track “Through the Starless Abyss”.  This track is a little more on the headbanger-riff, mid paced side and filled with blast beats. The last track entitled “Gratum Inferno” goes back to having the thundering d-beats and blast beats but also has an utterly crushing section littered with ominous sounding feedback squealing over the music to create a truly great atmosphere.  Another thing about these 3 tracks that I absolutely love are the vocals.. holy goddamn shit.. they are spot on.. I love the layered stuff throughout the tracks as well.

CLERIC is a band that I seriously have some of the highest hopes for and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the material that’s going to be on the album “Gratum Inferno” and whatever else they put out in the future. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend checking this out if you’re a fan of ENTOMBED, GRAVE, DISMEMBER, INTERMENT, ACEPHALIX, MORTUOUS, NECROT, DISMA, FUNEBRARUM or if you just love absolutely crushing death metal. Let your ears be the ultimate judge like I always say.
