Insane Sand Sculptures by Toshihiko Hosaka

If you’ve ever tried to build a sandcastle, you know how friggen hard it is to make it look even halfway good. So it’s unbelievable that Toshihiko Hosaka can build the massive, epic, fantastical sculptures that he does entirely out of damp sand. He uses only a few metal tools to create sculptures full of movement, conjuring fantasy out of the earth. His inspiration draws from myth and story from cultures around the world, both ancient and contemporary – everything from Greek and Japanese mythologies to Alice in Wonderland and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. He has sculpted massive lizards both fiction and fact – Godzilla and T-Rex are both created in startling realism. Everything is sculpted using only sand, with a thin coating of adhesive on the surface to keep it intact for a bit longer. But in the end all of his works are temporary, eroding back into the earth, leaving only images of his stunning sculptures behind. Check out some of his pieces below.
