The last of the cluster of Prison Tatt releases up for review, Malkuth’s Tamahprabha, is raw black metal poison for the ears of the uninitiated. Savage and primitive, Tamahprabha starts things off at a blistering pace, transitioning riffs with the use of tempos that vary to keep things fresh.
Scar Sighted is a gem in this 2015 that has just started for two reasons mainly: one, you will not hear a metal album quite like this all year, not only for this year actually, but likely for years to come; and two, with Scar Sighted, Leviathan is FUCKING BACK, back to their most disgusting and geniously appalling craft, the one we had loved so much up until the all time masterpiece Massive Conspiracy Against All Life came to life back in 2008.
Some of you may remember when Serpents Lair was featured on CVLT Nation after the release of their Demo MMXIV. The demo, comprised of two songs, features a lengthy runtime without having convoluted arrangements meant to sound epic. The songs don’t sound like they range from six to eight minutes, but in fact sound just like raw black metal played with a much shorter runtime.
VALIS is not an album that takes its time, emerging ponderously from a cocoon of ambiance and atmosphere that carries the listener into the stinging guitar winds of black metal. The debut LP from San Fransisco one-man project Mastery has neither time nor space for frivolity.
