I know someone who was told by her religious mother that any sexual thoughts that entered her head were put there by Satan. Religion definitely has a boner for sex – for trying against all odds to stop it from happening. And, of course, Satan’s pawns in getting us all laid are women: the temptress, the tramp, the succubus. Come on – can’t we all just admit we’re obsessed with sex, and enjoy it for fuck’s sake? Or maybe the evil and danger that Satan brings to it make it more fun… that definitely seems to be the case with the glut of vintage pulp fiction dedicated to Satanic sluts and Luciferian lovers. These look like the kinds of books that teenage me would have eaten up if I’d been able to find any at the school book sales (I had a vast collection of historical romance novels instead).
